ADE 2017 The Preview
Alright, yesterday I started my grand preview of ADE 2017! In Dutch, yes. By accident I must admit. I had this epiphany when taking a steambath with De Nachtwerker, not too long ago. I should deal with my fear of writing in a language that is not my native tongue. What better moment to try this than during the most international moment in the city, nightlifewise. In November, my blog Nachtsnuiver will have its one-year anniversary. And it's been Dutch only, till now. The only exception is my Canadian friend's preview last week. Busty and the Bass is still on the way, coming the 13th of October!
Enough blogs are covering big fat headliners that pop up nearly everywhere, everyday, starting October 18th. That's not why you're here. (I hope.) My main focus is making sure you enjoy your five days off (make it six!), and find the open spirit that made me fall in love with ADE years and years ago. So once again, welcome to my preview! I hope to find you the places that you can walk into for free, or maybe with the ADE Card in your pocket. The corners of the city that you didn't know. The places where you haven't already been to millions of parties. The djs that don't play the stadiums, or that do, but just for you, tonight, will play this small basement rave somewhere. Sometimes I find out about these things just minutes in advance. For those moments WhatsApp is the best weapon. I recommend you join my temporary ADE-group to find last minute open bars or better.
Also, I don't like the fact that half of the events are sold out already, and have been for quite some time now. So I will scout where you can still buy a decent ticket without too much hassle. Yes that includes real blockbusters like DJ Harvey and Seth Troxler, some of my ADE heroes. They both visited the city earlier this year, Seth in February and Harvey did a true Kingsnight. I even hope some of the places I recommend to you will have tickets at the door, etc.
See you around and welcome to Nachtsnuiver! Cheers!
PS, when writing this guide the mentioned price points of tickets were readily available. This can change at any minute. No guarantees. Don't sleep!
Wednesday 18 October - Day & Night
Click here to find out all about Wednesday the 18th. In Dutch (I warned you). Since Wednesday is history now, you might as well read about what happened, in English.
Thursday 19 October - Day
Urbanears Hideout
Here's hoping that the sweetest cushioned corner of ADE will be back this year. Swedish snacks, djs, a Clone record shop, and did I mention the view?
Last year:
12:00 Urbanears Hideout FREE
Mary Go Wild Basement Raves
Unfortunately nowadays the whole world knows about this basement. So the 'you have to be early', is a bit more stringent than it was when Mary first hosted this. Still, a good daytime techno rave. What's not to like. Latest news is that Drumcode will sell special edition t-shirts today.
14:00 Basement Raves @ Mary Go Wild FREE
Kompakt Pop Up Store
Yes I admit this is another biggy. The Kompakt label is more than well known in town. They've hosted many warehouse editions before. Instead of dancin' with thousands of people and spending a lot of cash, you can try your luck to dance with a few buds and a beer in their pop up store. Imagine walking around the Red Light District around 2pm. It's a great idea to just try to get a wristband. With these wristbands, you get access to the dj showcases, daily at 6pm. The Pre-Opening party will be directly on Wednesday at 6pm. Try to score entry at 5pm.
14:00 Kompakt Pop Up Store at Red Light District FREE
Slowmotion Club meets Brandon
My love for Michie and Lola knows zero boundaries. Come, hug & dance together!
15:00 Slowmotion Club meets Café Brandon FREE
Bordello A Parigi
Recordstore Bordello A Parigi hosts instores daily until Sunday. Today will see the likes of Afrobot, Barnt, De Dupe, Intergalactic Gary, Job Jobse and Skatebård. Also a secret dj might appear at any moment.
15:00 Bordello A Parigi instores FREE
Afternoon Tripel
Will Oirson, Lucky Done Gone and Gewelt bringing you the heat in this small bar downtown.
16:00 Afternoon Tripel at Belgique FREE
Strange Sounds From Beyond
As this was the festival I liked so much in 2016, I couldn't wait for this years' edition...only to find it had been counter-programmed with Roots, where Chilean friends were playing. So today, we will finally meet again, SSFB!
16:00 Strange Sounds From Beyond at Lab111 FREE
Embodied music: dancing and the brain
This is news that I love. Scientific research has proven dancing and listening to music have positive effects on the brain. Yes!
17:00 Embodied music at Spui25 FREE
RLR x Music From Memory x Carhartt
When Red Light Radio invites people you know it's gonna be good. Mr. Red Light (a) aka Orpheu & Mr. Red Light (b) aka Tako will see to it that Abel, Jonny Nash (live) and Michal Turtle (live too) will make this day even more pleasureful than it already was. Did I tell you this is in the middle of the Red Light District and includes free beer? Yeah. It will be busy.
18:00 RLR x Music From Memory at Red Light Radio FREE
Rush Hour
Everyday Rush Hour hosts sessions in their recordstore at Spuistraat. Kenny Dope will play at 7pm.
19:00 Rush Hour instore FREE
Beer, Yoga & Beats
I admit I am no Yogi. Somehow I like how these people seem to have a combination on offer I didn't notice before. Two ice-cold Coronas and a 60-minute class of BeerYoga.
19:30 Beer, Yoga & Beats at Floor Studio NDSM 13,50
Thursday 19 October - Night
TopNotch Surprise Party
It's a surprise party, let yourself be surprised!
20:00 TopNotch x Noah's Ark x Universal Music at Waterkant FREE
Foam x ADE Playground
Yesterday at a different location, today it seems to be at the Stenen Hoofd. A beautiful spot near the IJ river. Meet artist Jean-Vincent Simonet & dj Trippin Jaguar!
20:00 Foam x ADE Playground at Stenen Hoofd FREE
Ellen Allien: Vinylism
Ellen has seen countless ADEs already. She's back and has invited friends to spin: Modeselektor, K-hand, Molly and Cem will be there.
20:30 Ellen Allien FREE
Red Light Records late night by Dance With Pride
So it was already crowded thanks to the session that started at 6pm. Now it will get even crazier. With Objekt b2b DJ Stingray & MAYO this night is all but over.
21:00 Dance With Pride at Red Light Radio FREE
Krooks
Studio/K has brought me a lot of fun and dancin' this year. That will continue without a doubt during ADE. With Isis, Polynation, Yør Kultura, Spageagepoetry, Emilio Bestevez and Josh Dupree, you don't have to worry about a thing! It will be warm and gentle. 20,- entry buys you a black tote bag, 25,- and you get vegan dinner served before the party starts!
21:00 Krooks in Studio/K 15,-
Rebel Up Soundclash: Nyege Tapes
Not part of ADE, but still welcome in my line-up. Otim Alpha & Leo Palayeng (live).
21:00 Rebel Up in OCCII 7,-
BAR Love Forever
BAR might be the best Rotterdam has to offer these days, as I found out just last week. More on that soon (in Dutch). The people who run the place are coming over for some fun at my Tuesday Taco Palace: Struik, Rozengracht.
21:00 BAR Love Forever at Struik FREE
A life in Waves: Suzanne Ciani
If only half the stories about Suzanne are true, we should go and see this movie!
21:30 A life in waves at Lab111 FREE with ADE Card (or Cineville for residents)
Edison Jams
Edison Jams was my start of ADE16, nerds playing cool stuff. Locals Das Ding, Sjamsoedin and Olivier Boogie will take care of you this year and my favorite Carlos Valdes will be there as well.
22:00 Edison Jams at OT301 8,-
Chosen Few
Chicago is coming to Amsterdam. A lovely show with Terry Hunter, Mike Dunn, DJ Spen and Mike Risk. What I like especially is that for a grand location like Madam, (on top of the ADAM tower, which you can see directly from the train station), they sell tickets in the simplest way. No early and late bird nonsense.
22:00 Chosen Few and friends at Madam 19,99
Fade to Mind showcase
If the rumours are true, Kingdom is a producer you want to see. Become Subbacultcha member and pay 8,- monthly to see him, or 15,- at the door. Be aware, this will be in the Subbacultcha space called s105 on the ground floor. Not De School basement where you can do your thing for 60+ hours in het weekend.
22:00 Fade To Mind showcase at De School 15,-
A Guy Called Gerald
This is (one of the reasons) why I love ADE. A Guy Called Gerald is coming to play. Now this rarely happens in town. But he will do an all-nighter with friends. For. Free. I just don't know how to explain this to you. Please dance.
22:30 A Guy Called Gerald and friends at VLLA FREE
DVS1's Wall of Sound
This will probably turn out to be the most expensive party I recommend that you pay the slightly ridiculous entry fee for. The why I will explain, shortly though. DVS1 must have a lot of friends around the country, because I have seen him more than once walking around with his Wall of Sound-system. Last time I heard this megastadiumlikemadnessmachine was in the city of Rotterdam, Maassilo. Well I can tell you, don't forget your earplugs. And don't miss Helena.
23:00 DVS1's Wall of Sound at Warehouse Elementenstraat 50,- through TicketSwap
Tresor x BPitch
Ellen Allien continues the eve you started for free in the center. DJ Stingray joins her, Objekt and Inga Mauer are also not to be missed.
23:00 Tresor x BPitch at Radion 24,30
Garage Noord
This old garage selling food and drinks made quite the impression lately with some cream of the crop invitations, tonight: Powder, towLie, DJ Sling & Louis Guilliaume (live).
23:00 ADE Thursday at Garage Noord 10,-
LAPA
Promises to be a special night. Carista opens the second room which Elias will close. Lefto plays room #1 at 2am. And that beautiful flyer.
23:00 LAPA at Claire 20,-
On Loop
Honourable mention: Leon Vynehall made us go completely nuts one night at De School last year. A couple hundred souls were there to experience it. I will never forget. He is joined by Matthew Herbert, Moxie, and the great Shanti Celeste. Enjoy! Oh yeah, intimate sources told me the sound will be expanded from what was already impressive for the small club that SF is!
Leon, April 2016, De School Amsterdam:
23:55 Onloop at Sugarfactory 20,-
Friday 20 October - Day (Morning really)
Jackmaster and Optimo doing a b2b with the morning light shining into The Loft. Now I'm not in love with Audio Obscura and the spam tactics of their Underworld craze, but right now this is still an easy buy if the budget is OK for you.
UPDATE: Kamma (a personal favorite) & Hellie Berry got added, I'm guessing as a warm up!
07:00 Jackmaster b2b Optimo at The Loft 22,50
Watch out for the next update about ADE Friday coming soon. ADE Wednesday (in Dutch) you can find right here.
