Busty and the Bass in Amsterdam

Voor ik naar Lente Kabinet ging dit jaar at ik vis in Noord met De Canadese, vrienden van haar treden op in Amsterdam de komende tijd en ik heb haar gevraagd wat te schrijven.

I can’t quite explain how happy I am to share this with you. The man behind ‘Nachtsnuiver’ is my oldest friend in Amsterdam and no doubt the best to find an adventure with. For two years, he’s has been finding me fun in the city. Finally, I have a few tips of my own to share.

Last Tuesday, Mauno played at Sugarfactory, and on October 13, Busty and the Bass will be at Paradiso. I grew up in Canada with Eliza Niemi (bass / vocals, Mauno), and Nick Ferarro (lead vocals / saxophone, Busty). As teenagers, we were lucky to be part of a pretty cool arts community, playing music together and generally having lots of fun. I’m extremely proud that a decade later (is that possible?), these talented friends of mine are playing their own music around the world.

Mauno

Mauno formed in 2014 in the Maritimes of Canada, where most of the band is from. To me, their roots explain the welcoming environment they create during their shows. Their sound has been described as ranging from “twisting grunge-pop” to “piano ambiance”. More recently, they’ve brought in a more pop-oriented sound (see their sophomore album, Tuning). I’ve been lucky to see them perform in London, and this year in the beautiful Paradijskerk at Motel Mozaïque in Rotterdam. Finally, I get to welcome them to Amsterdam.

Busty and the Bass

I’ve learned that, in Amsterdam, gigs aren’t booked to create the kind of night-time adventures I grew up with. But, somehow, Busty will play at 22:00 on a Friday – maybe because their music is built for that kind of night. The band brings a lot of talent into their music, creating a sound “reminiscent of artists like Parliament, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Michael Jackson, weaving in the contemporary influence of Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo, and James Blake.” Busty released their debut album, Uncommon Good, earlier this month, a project guided by hip-hop producer Neal Pogue (Outkast, Earth Wind and Fire, MIA, Nicki Minaj, Aretha Franklin).
